The Secret Life of Walter Mitty: A Movie Review

Walter Mitty (Ben Stiller) is a day dreamer. One instant, he’ll be right in the room with you, the next he’ll be miles away, off on some crazy adventure that, in real life, he would never do.

That is until his job at Life Magazine is threatened by a company take-over. In order to secure a photo he believes to be lost, Walter travels across the world with only small clues to follow to find the photographer, who is impossible to get in touch with. But during his journey, he discovers more about himself and what he wants than he ever believed.

Based off a short story by James Thurber, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty takes a lot of creative license from the short story, which is expected since the short story is only a few paragraphs long and the movie is about an hour and a half. The main detail, though, remains the same: Walter Mitty is a day dreamer, which may get him into trouble more than he knows.

I personally found the movie to be very inspirational. The tag line, “Stop dreaming. Start living.” definitely speaks to me. It’s just unfortunate that it’s next to impossible to just drop your entire life and go across the country chasing your dreams, because I know many people who would love to do that.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is family friendly and a great choice to show kids it’s better to follow your dreams and live life than to remain in your head.
