Eon by Alison Goodman

Eon has been training for years to enter into the ranks of consideration to be the next Dragoneye, an apprentice to one of the 12 energy dragons of good fortune. However, Eon has a secret: his real name is Eona and he is really a teenage girl. Living in a world of extreme patriarchy where females are forbidden to learn Dragon Magic, if Eon’s secret is discovered both him and his Master could lose their lives.

But on the day of the ceremony, the Mirror Dragon, the twelfth dragon that had been missing for over 500 years, returns and chooses Eon as ascendant and placing him closer to his enemies. Now Eon must quickly learn how to harness his powers before the lives of him and his allies are put in danger.

Recommended to me by a friend, I found Eon to be a great read. I would definitely recommend it for teenage girls, as it deals heavily with Eona coming of age at a time when she can’t be herself and cannot embrace her female side. The story was well written and the pace was never too slow or too fast. The ending also leaves readers curious and wanting more. I definitely can’t wait to get my hands on the next installment.

Grade: A+
